An old Italian plum-type tomato that produces beautiful clusters of small, oval yellow fruits, each ending in an attractive pointed tip. It is prized for its traditional storage in hanging clusters.
What stands out about Piennolo del Vesuvio Giallo is its mild, balanced flavor, with less acidity than Piennolo del Vesuvio Rosso. Its fruits have dense, meaty flesh and a moderate to pronounced flavor intensity. Like its red counterpart, it is associated with the Italian tradition of hanging tomato clusters in a well-ventilated place to preserve the fruits for several months.
What makes Piennolo del Vesuvio Giallo particularly interesting is its story. This yellow mutation is said to have been discovered in the garden of a grower near Naples and named after his granddaughter, Giulia. Also known as GiaGiu or Giallo di Giulia, it was preserved and shared more widely, notably by Hans Fama in Southern California.
Every variety has its own personality. The best tomato isn’t the one that everyone likes, but the one that finds its place in your garden, your kitchen, and your habits.
